\nPlease tell us a little bit about your book?<\/span> <\/strong><\/p>\n

Eleven-year-old Kat Greene has a lot on her pre-rinsed plate, thanks to her divorced mom\u2019s obsession with cleaning. When Mom isn\u2019t scrubbing every inch of their Greenwich Village apartment, she\u2019s boiling the silverware or checking Kat\u2019s sheets for bedbugs. Add friendship troubles to the mix, a crummy role in the school play, and Mom’s decision to try out for\u00a0Clean Sweep<\/em>, a TV game show about cleaning, and what’ve you got? More trouble than Kat can handle\u2014at least without a little help from her friends.<\/p>\n

What inspired you to write this story and\/or these characters?<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

I first got the idea from a fortune cookie. It said, \u201cA winsome smile is your sure protection.\u201d I wasn\u2019t sure what it meant quite honestly, but I liked the sentiment. So I started freewriting, and Kat Greene \u2013 a smart, kind, funny 11-year-old \u2013 popped out!<\/p>\n

In terms of the mom\u2019s character, that is more complicated. As you know from reading the book (thanks, Trish! J), Kat\u2019s mom suffers from a cleaning compulsion\u2014a symptom of her OCD. She\u2019s also afraid of germs and contamination. It wasn\u2019t until I was done writing the book that I realized that the mom is actually based on my dad. It honestly hadn\u2019t occurred to me, at least on a conscious level. My dad, however, is the opposite of Kat\u2019s mom. He is extremely messy and keeps everything.<\/em> I actually found a datebook in his apartment from 1973! He also hasn\u2019t been diagnosed with OCD, although his behavior certainly points to it. He\u2019s a checker, for instance, which means he can\u2019t sleep until he\u2019s checked the front-door locks at least three times. I too have some OCD symptoms, including the need to have my window shades fixed at a certain level, but I wouldn\u2019t say they adversely affect my life. They\u2019re just annoying\u2014to my family, and to myself.<\/p>\n

Everyone says writing is a process. Could you share a little about your writing and\/or research process?<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n

I try to write every day, even if it\u2019s for 15 minutes. That\u2019s not to say I actually do it, but the operative word is try<\/em>! I also like to do a little prewriting before I sit down to work. I have a special journal for this purpose, and I use it to test out ideas, explore plot points, and to ask myself plenty of \u201cWhat if\u201d questions. For instance, there\u2019s a scene in my book where Halle is blabbing on and on about her crush, Michael McGraw.\u00a0 I wasn\u2019t sure how Kat should react, so I asked myself: \u201cWhat if Kat told Halle to put a lid on it?\u201d From there, the scene developed fluidly. Also, I don\u2019t work from an outline, but I do write a synopsis before I tackle a project. I like to have a roadmap, even if I don\u2019t follow it. It keeps me focused, and on track.<\/p>\n

In terms of research, I had to do quite a lot, because I wanted to make sure that the mom\u2019s OCD was portrayed fairly and accurately. Therefore, I read many books on the subject\u2014including Traci Foust\u2019s excellent Nowhere Near Normal: A Memoir of OCD<\/em>\u2014and I interviewed psychologists and psychiatrists. I wanted to be respectful of those who suffer from this disorder, as well as family members who suffer as a result.<\/p>\n

We know no writer is created in a vacuum. Could you tell the readers about a teacher or a librarian who had an effect on your writing life?<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

I can\u2019t choose one teacher because there were so many (!), but I can say that my love of writing was definitely nurtured and encouraged by my teachers at the City and Country School, the century-old progressive school, in New York\u2019s Greenwich Village, on which Kat\u2019s school is loosely based.\u00a0 City and Country taught me to think outside the box, and to work independently. We didn\u2019t have homework, or tests, or grades\u2014yet we managed to \u201clearn by doing,\u201d the guiding principle of the school, coined by C&C\u2019s visionary founder, educator Caroline Pratt.
\n<\/strong><\/p>\n

What makes your book a good pick for use in a classroom? Is there any particular way you\u2019d like to see teachers use it with young readers\/teens?<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

I think KAT works well in a classroom, because most of the action takes place in the classroom\u2014namely, the Village Humanity School, Kat\u2019s ultra-progressive elementary school. That\u2019s not to say that Kat\u2019s classroom experience will mirror that of a more traditional classroom, but there are certain themes that are universal: coping with conflict; working out differences; respecting others; kindness. \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 <\/strong><\/p>\n

I am a huge fan of my friend Irene\u2019s bulldog, Bo Hwang. He has a sweet disposition, a cute wrinkly face, and a fierce sense of style. He has his own Facebook page too.<\/p>\n
