It&#8217;s turned darker, deeper. A color that signifies the change in seasons here on the high desert. A color that, to my eye, means means the beginning of the the end of summer.<\/p>\n<p>The next morning I woke to Eric Nixon&#8217;s fine poem, &#8220;Peak Summer&#8221;,\u00a0 in my inbox. A little reminder to grab all the summer you can get, before it&#8217;s gone.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><strong>Peak Summer<\/strong><br \/>\nby Eric Nixon<\/p>\n<p>We\u2019re steeped deep in summer<br \/>\nAnd everything around me<br \/>\nSeems to indicate it\u2019ll never end<br \/>\nBut still I\u2019m spending time<br \/>\nLooking for the subtle signs<br \/>\nTrying to figure out when<br \/>\nWe\u2019ve reached peak summer<br \/>\nWhen the billion green trees<br \/>\nStart to dull ever so slightly<br \/>\nWhen the bounty of vegetables<br \/>\nFound at all the local farm stands<br \/>\nStart thinning in quantity and quality<br \/>\nWhen the Halloween candy<br \/>\nAppears in the supermarkets<br \/>\nAnd the <em>Back To School!<\/em> signs<br \/>\nShow up in the big box stores<br \/>\nWhen the sun sets a little earlier<br \/>\nAnd gets a little more noticeable<br \/>\nEach night, night after night<br \/>\nUntil you start thinking about<br \/>\nHow much daylight you\u2019ve lost<br \/>\nAll of the signs and all of the things<br \/>\nI\u2019ve been noticing are telling me<br \/>\nThat we\u2019re right in the midst of<br \/>\nPeak summer and if I\u2019m not careful<br \/>\nIt\u2019ll be completely over<br \/>\nAnd I\u2019ll have missed it entirely<br \/>\nAs the season folds into fall<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>\u201cPeak Summer\u201d by Eric Nixon from <em>Equidistant<\/em>. \u00a9 Double Yolk Press, 2019<\/p>\n<p>How do you know summer&#8217;s on the way out in your neck of the woods?
